She studied at the University of British Columbia and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Aitken's career began in the 1970s when she joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as their principal flutist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was soon invited to perform as a soloist with the orchestra. Aitken's performances were highly acclaimed, and she soon became one of the most sought-after flutists in Canada. In 1976, Aitken was appointed as the principal flutist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, a position she held for over 20 years.
