The Leipziger Hornquartett is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound for over three decades. The quartet was formed in 1983 in Leipzig, Germany, by four talented horn players who shared a passion for chamber music. The founding members of the quartet were Klaus Wallendorf, Froydis Ree Wekre, Stefan de Leval Jezierski, and Zbigniew Zuk. All four musicians were accomplished horn players who had studied at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig. They quickly established themselves as one of the most exciting and innovative chamber music ensembles in Germany. The Leipziger Hornquartett's repertoire is diverse and includes works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. They have performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance at the 1986 International Horn Society Conference in Banff, Canada. They received critical acclaim for their performance of Mozart's Horn Quintet, K. 407, and were invited to perform at the 1988 International Horn Society Conference in Denver, Colorado. In 1990, the quartet released their debut album, "Hornquartette," which featured works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann. The album received widespread critical acclaim and helped to establish the quartet as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in Europe. Over the years, the Leipziger Hornquartett has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Gidon Kremer, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. They have also worked with many contemporary composers, including György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Sofia Gubaidulina, to premiere new works for horn quartet. In 2003, the quartet celebrated their 20th anniversary with a special concert at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The concert featured works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as a new work by German composer Wolfgang Rihm. The Leipziger Hornquartett has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1992, they were awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik award for their album "Hornquartette." They have also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Diapason d'Or. Today, the Leipziger Hornquartett continues to perform and record, delighting audiences with their unique sound and innovative programming. They have released over a dozen albums, including "Hornquartette II," "Hornquartette III," and "Hornquartette IV." Their most recent album, "Hornquartette V," was released in 2018 and features works by Brahms, Ligeti, and Rihm. The Leipziger Hornquartett's legacy is one of innovation, excellence, and dedication to the art of chamber music.
