Joseph Méry was a French composer, pianist, and music critic who lived from 1797 to 1866. He was born in Marseille, France, and showed an early interest in music. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Méry began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with local teachers in Marseille. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument and began performing in public at the age of 12. He continued his studies in Paris, where he studied with some of the most renowned pianists of the time. In addition to his piano studies, Méry also studied composition and music theory. He was particularly interested in the works of Beethoven and Mozart, and he sought to incorporate their styles into his own compositions. Méry's first major performance came in 1820, when he performed his own piano concerto with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra. The performance was a great success, and Méry was hailed as a rising star in the French music scene. Over the next several years, Méry continued to perform and compose music. He wrote a number of piano pieces, including sonatas, nocturnes, and études. He also composed several chamber works, including string quartets and piano trios. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Méry was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several French newspapers and magazines, including Le Figaro and La Revue des Deux Mondes. His reviews were known for their insightful analysis and thoughtful commentary. Méry's most famous work as a critic was his review of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. The review, which was published in La Revue des Deux Mondes in 1830, was highly critical of the work. Méry accused Berlioz of being too self-indulgent and criticized the work for its lack of structure. The review caused a great deal of controversy, and Berlioz responded with a scathing letter to the editor. Despite his controversial review of Berlioz's work, Méry remained a respected figure in the French music scene. He continued to perform and compose music, and he was recognized with several awards and honors. In 1835, he was awarded the Legion of Honor, one of France's highest honors. He was also elected to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1841. Méry's later years were marked by declining health. He suffered from a number of illnesses, including tuberculosis and rheumatism. Despite his health problems, he continued to compose music and write reviews until his death in 1866. Today, Joseph Méry is remembered as one of the most important figures in French classical music. His compositions, while not as well-known as those of some of his contemporaries, are still performed and recorded today. His contributions as a music critic are also remembered, and his reviews continue to be studied by music scholars and historians.
