Westwind Brass is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences with their unique blend of brass music for over 30 years. The ensemble was founded in 1986 by five musicians who shared a passion for brass music and a desire to bring their talents to the public. The founding members of Westwind Brass were Bryan Smith (trumpet), Barry Toombs (trumpet), Elizabeth Howard (horn), Richard Patteson (trombone), and Martin Hackleman (tuba). All five musicians were accomplished performers with extensive experience in the classical music world. From the beginning, Westwind Brass set out to create a sound that was both traditional and innovative. They drew inspiration from the great brass ensembles of the past, such as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the Canadian Brass, but also sought to incorporate new and exciting elements into their music. Over the years, Westwind Brass has undergone some changes in membership, but the core sound and philosophy of the ensemble has remained the same. Today, the group consists of Bryan Smith (trumpet), Karl Soukup (trumpet), Barry Toombs (horn), Eric Starr (trombone), and John Wilds (tuba). One of the hallmarks of Westwind Brass is their commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has performed in schools, community centers, and other venues throughout the United States, bringing their music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. They have also conducted masterclasses and workshops, sharing their knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. In addition to their educational work, Westwind Brass has also achieved great success in the classical music world. They have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Hollywood Bowl. They have also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians in the world, including Yo-Yo Ma, Plácido Domingo, and Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of Westwind Brass's career was their performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. The ensemble was selected to represent the United States in the Cultural Olympiad, a celebration of the arts that took place alongside the athletic events. Westwind Brass performed at several events throughout the Olympics, including the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony. Westwind Brass has also been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the classical music world. They have received numerous awards and accolades, including the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming and the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. They have also been featured on several recordings, including their own album, "Westwind Brass: Live at the Hollywood Bowl." Despite their many achievements, Westwind Brass remains committed to their mission of bringing brass music to a wider audience. They continue to perform in a variety of settings, from concert halls to community centers, and to inspire and educate the next generation of musicians. In conclusion, Westwind Brass is a classical music ensemble that has made a significant impact on the world of brass music. Founded over 30 years ago by a group of talented musicians, the ensemble has remained true to their vision of creating a unique and innovative sound. Through their performances, education, and outreach work, Westwind Brass has inspired countless people and helped to keep the tradition of brass music alive and thriving.
