The founding members of Westwind Brass were Bryan Smith (trumpet), Barry Toombs (trumpet), Elizabeth Howard (horn), Richard Patteson (trombone), and Martin Hackleman (tuba). All five musicians were accomplished performers with extensive experience in the classical music world. From the beginning, Westwind Brass set out to create a sound that was both traditional and innovative. They drew inspiration from the great brass ensembles of the past, such as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the Canadian Brass, but also sought to incorporate new and exciting elements into their music. Over the years, Westwind Brass has undergone some changes in membership, but the core sound and philosophy of the ensemble has remained the same. Today, the group consists of Bryan Smith (trumpet), Karl Soukup (trumpet), Barry Toombs (horn), Eric Starr (trombone), and John Wilds (tuba). One of the hallmarks of Westwind Brass is their commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has performed in schools, community centers, and other venues throughout the United States, bringing their music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. They have also conducted masterclasses and workshops, sharing their knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. In addition to their educational work, Westwind Brass has also achieved great success in the classical music world.
