From a young age, Grummer was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Grummer's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of nine, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. This performance was widely acclaimed, and Grummer was hailed as a child prodigy. Grummer continued to perform extensively throughout his childhood and teenage years, both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber ensembles. He won numerous awards and competitions, including the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland, in 1990. In 1993, Grummer moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He continued to perform and win awards, including the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1998. Grummer's career continued to flourish in the early 2000s, with performances at major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also began recording extensively, with his recordings of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas and the complete Chopin nocturnes receiving critical acclaim. In 2005, Grummer suffered a serious injury to his right hand, which threatened to end his career. He underwent extensive rehabilitation and was able to return to performing after several years. During this time, he also began teaching at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. Grummer's comeback performances were widely celebrated, and he continued to perform and record throughout the 2010s. He was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 2016, in recognition of his contributions to classical music. Grummer's playing was characterized by his technical virtuosity and his deep emotional connection to the music. He was known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann, among others. Tragically, Grummer passed away on March 1, 2021, at the age of 45.
