Guy Raffalli was a French classical guitarist born on December 22, 1949, in Ajaccio, Corsica. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. At the age of six, Raffalli began playing the guitar and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Raffalli's early musical education was primarily focused on the classical guitar repertoire. He studied under the tutelage of renowned guitarists such as Alexandre Lagoya and Ida Presti. In 1968, Raffalli won first prize at the Paris Conservatory, which marked the beginning of his professional career as a classical guitarist. Throughout his career, Raffalli performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He was known for his virtuosic playing style and his ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles, from Baroque to contemporary music. Raffalli was also a prolific recording artist, with over 20 albums to his name. One of Raffalli's most notable performances was at the 1981 International Guitar Festival in Paris, where he performed a program of works by Bach, Sor, and Villa-Lobos. His performance was met with critical acclaim, and he was praised for his technical precision and musical sensitivity. In addition to his solo performances, Raffalli was also a sought-after chamber musician. He frequently collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Jean-Jacques Kantorow and cellist Henri Demarquette. Together, they performed works by composers such as Schubert, Beethoven, and Brahms. Throughout his career, Raffalli received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1983, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of works by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. He was also awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Despite his success as a classical guitarist, Raffalli remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and record until his death on December 1, 2016, at the age of 66. His legacy as a virtuoso guitarist and passionate musician lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired throughout his career.
