Marilyn Sansom was born on May 12, 1965, in London, England. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Marilyn showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began performing in public at the age of eight. Marilyn's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied piano under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires. Marilyn's talent and dedication to her craft quickly became apparent, and she was awarded numerous scholarships and awards during her time at the academy. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Marilyn began performing professionally as a soloist and chamber musician. She quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and versatile pianists of her generation, and her performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. One of Marilyn's most notable performances was at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where she performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Marilyn received a standing ovation from the audience. Marilyn's career continued to flourish, and she went on to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. She also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Riccardo Muti. In addition to her work as a soloist, Marilyn was also a passionate chamber musician. She formed a piano trio with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman, and the trio performed together for many years, delighting audiences around the world with their virtuosic performances. Marilyn's talent and dedication to her craft were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1998 for her services to music, and in 2003, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, which is awarded annually to outstanding classical musicians in the United States. Despite her success, Marilyn remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve her technique and interpretation of the music she played. She was also a passionate advocate for music education, and she worked tirelessly to promote music education in schools and communities around the world. Tragically, Marilyn's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2010. She continued to perform and record music throughout her illness, and her final performance was a benefit concert for cancer research in London in 2012. Marilyn Sansom will always be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of her generation. Her talent, dedication, and passion for music inspired countless musicians and music lovers around the world, and her legacy will continue to live on through her recordings and the countless musicians she inspired.
