The BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) is a classical music ensemble based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1928 as the Cardiff Station Orchestra, and was later renamed the Welsh Symphony Orchestra. In 1935, the orchestra became the BBC Welsh Orchestra, and in 1993 it was renamed the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The ensemble is made up of around 80 musicians, and is led by Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft. Other key members of the orchestra include Leader Lesley Hatfield, Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang, and Composer-in-Association Huw Watkins. Over the years, the BBC NOW has performed a wide range of classical music, from traditional orchestral works to contemporary pieces. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of well-known soloists and conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Bryn Terfel. One of the highlights of the BBC NOW's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1999 Rugby World Cup, which was held in Cardiff. The orchestra played a specially commissioned piece by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world.
