The BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) is a classical music ensemble based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1928 as the Cardiff Station Orchestra, and was later renamed the Welsh Symphony Orchestra. In 1935, the orchestra became the BBC Welsh Orchestra, and in 1993 it was renamed the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The ensemble is made up of around 80 musicians, and is led by Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft. Other key members of the orchestra include Leader Lesley Hatfield, Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang, and Composer-in-Association Huw Watkins. Over the years, the BBC NOW has performed a wide range of classical music, from traditional orchestral works to contemporary pieces. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of well-known soloists and conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Bryn Terfel. One of the highlights of the BBC NOW's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1999 Rugby World Cup, which was held in Cardiff. The orchestra played a specially commissioned piece by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. Another notable performance by the BBC NOW was its appearance at the 2012 Proms, where it played a programme of Welsh music, including works by William Mathias and Grace Williams. The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to its live performances, the BBC NOW has also recorded a number of albums, including a series of recordings of the orchestral works of Welsh composer Alun Hoddinott. The orchestra has also won a number of awards over the years, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Concert Series in 2012. Despite its long history, the BBC NOW remains a vital and dynamic force in the world of classical music.
