Kivie began playing the cello at the age of four, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already performed in numerous concerts and competitions. Cahn-Lipman attended the Juilliard School, where he studied with cellist Joel Krosnick and composer Samuel Adler. He also studied at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in contemporary performance. During his studies, Cahn-Lipman became interested in contemporary music and began collaborating with composers to create new works for the cello. After completing his studies, Cahn-Lipman became a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), a group dedicated to performing and promoting contemporary music. With ICE, Cahn-Lipman has performed in major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Barbican Centre in London. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading composers, including Steve Reich, John Zorn, and Kaija Saariaho. In addition to his work with ICE, Cahn-Lipman has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. He has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. He has also performed at major festivals such as the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Ojai Music Festival, and the Lucerne Festival. In 2012, he was awarded a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, which allowed him to pursue his work as a performer and composer. He has also received grants from the Fromm Music Foundation and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music. One of Cahn-Lipman's most notable performances was his 2014 solo recital at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The performance was praised by critics for its virtuosity and innovative programming. Cahn-Lipman is also a dedicated educator and has taught at institutions such as the New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Michigan, and the University of California, San Diego.
