Gaurav Mazumdar is a renowned classical music artist from India, known for his exceptional skills on the sitar. Born on 10th October 1971 in Kolkata, India, Gaurav was introduced to music at a very young age. His father, Sri Montu Mazumdar, was a renowned sitar player and disciple of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan. Gaurav's father recognized his son's talent and started training him in sitar playing when he was just five years old. Gaurav's early years were spent in Kolkata, where he received his initial training in music from his father. He also received guidance from other renowned sitar players such as Pandit Manilal Nag and Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta. Gaurav's father was a strict teacher, and he made sure that his son practiced for several hours every day. Gaurav's dedication and hard work paid off, and he soon became a proficient sitar player. In 1985, Gaurav's family moved to Mumbai, where he continued his music education under the guidance of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is one of the most renowned sitar players in India, and Gaurav considers him to be his guru. Under Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan's tutelage, Gaurav's skills on the sitar improved significantly, and he started performing in public concerts. Gaurav's first major performance was at the age of 16, when he performed at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune, India. The Sawai Gandharva Music Festival is one of the most renowned music festivals in India, and performing there is considered to be a great honor. Gaurav's performance was well-received, and he received praise from both the audience and the critics. In 1991, Gaurav won the All India Radio Music Competition, which is a highly prestigious competition in India. Winning this competition was a significant achievement for Gaurav, and it helped him establish himself as a prominent sitar player in India. Over the years, Gaurav has performed in several major music festivals in India and abroad. He has performed at the Dover Lane Music Conference in Kolkata, the Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan in Jalandhar, and the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior, among others. He has also performed in several countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Gaurav has collaborated with several renowned musicians from India and abroad. He has performed with the tabla player Zakir Hussain, the sarod player Amjad Ali Khan, and the violinist L. Subramaniam, among others. He has also collaborated with musicians from other genres, such as the jazz pianist Chick Corea and the flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. Gaurav has received several awards and honors for his contributions to Indian classical music. In 2001, he received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, which is a prestigious award given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy of music, dance, and drama in India. In 2010, he received the Pandit Nikhil Banerjee Memorial Award, which is given to young sitar players who show exceptional promise. Apart from his performances, Gaurav is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught sitar to several students over the years, and many of his students have gone on to become successful sitar players themselves. Gaurav believes that teaching is an essential part of being a musician, and he is committed to passing on his knowledge and skills to the next generation of sitar players.
