The orchestra was founded in 1923 as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) and has since become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. The RSB was initially established as a radio orchestra, performing live broadcasts for the Berlin radio station. The orchestra's first conductor was Eugen Jochum, who led the ensemble until 1933. During this time, the RSB gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. In 1933, the Nazi regime came to power in Germany, and the RSB was forced to change its name to the Großes Rundfunkorchester Berlin (GRO). The orchestra continued to perform throughout World War II, despite the difficult circumstances, and was eventually disbanded in 1945. After the war, the orchestra was re-established as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and began performing again in 1946. The ensemble quickly regained its reputation as one of the finest orchestras in Europe, and in 1956, it was renamed the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO). In 2002, the RSO merged with the Berlin Radio Orchestra to form the Berlin Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (BRPO). The new ensemble continued to perform under the direction of its chief conductor, Marek Janowski, and quickly established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Germany. Over the years, the BRPO has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Ferenc Fricsay, Lorin Maazel, and Riccardo Chailly. The orchestra has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the highlights of the BRPO's history was its performance at the 2006 Berlin Philharmonic New Year's Eve Concert. The orchestra, under the direction of Marek Janowski, performed a program of works by Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár, and other composers, to great critical acclaim. The BRPO has also been recognized for its recordings, winning numerous awards for its performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and other composers. In 2010, the orchestra won the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Brahms' Symphony No. 1, conducted by Marek Janowski. Today, the Berlin Radio Philharmonic Orchestra continues to perform regularly in Berlin and around the world. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences. With a rich history and a bright future, the BRPO is sure to remain one of the most respected orchestras in Europe for years to come.More....
