His father was a renowned cellist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Kuhn was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Kuhn's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division when he was just six years old. He studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. Kuhn's talent and dedication to his craft were evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the top students in his class. Kuhn's talent continued to flourish as he grew older, and he began to gain recognition for his performances. At the age of 12, he won first prize in the New York State Music Teachers Association Piano Competition. This was just the beginning of Kuhn's success in competitions, as he went on to win numerous other awards and prizes throughout his career. In 2003, Kuhn was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Gary Graffman. During his time at Curtis, Kuhn continued to excel, and he was awarded the prestigious Rachmaninoff Prize in 2005. After graduating from Curtis in 2007, Kuhn began to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2008, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Kuhn received rave reviews for his virtuosic playing and musicality. Kuhn's career continued to flourish, and he began to perform with some of the world's top orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also began to collaborate with other musicians, forming a piano trio with violinist Sarah Chang and cellist Alisa Weilerstein. In 2011, Kuhn was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. The grant provided Kuhn with financial support and helped to further establish him as one of the top pianists of his generation. Kuhn's repertoire is vast and includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. He is known for his technical prowess and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he plays. In addition to his performances, Kuhn is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at some of the top music schools in the world, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London.
