She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a violinist and conductor. Erlih began playing the violin at the age of four and was soon recognized as a child prodigy. She studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jules Boucherit and won the first prize in violin at the age of 13. Erlih made her debut as a soloist with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire at the age of 14. She went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She was also a frequent performer at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Erlih was known for her virtuosity and her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she played. She was particularly admired for her interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. She was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by many leading composers of the 20th century, including Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux. Erlih was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1951, she won the first prize at the International Violin Competition in Geneva. She was also awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her recordings of the violin concertos of Mozart and Beethoven. In 1975, she was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, one of the highest honors in France. Erlih continued to perform and record well into her later years. She was known for her dedication to her craft and her tireless work ethic. She passed away on March 23, 2019, at the age of 90.
