James Curnow is a renowned American composer and arranger of classical music. He was born on January 5, 1943, in Port Huron, Michigan, to a family of musicians. His father was a band director, and his mother was a pianist. Curnow grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. He later learned to play the trumpet and the French horn. Curnow attended Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and a Master of Music degree in music education. He also studied conducting with Leonard Falcone and composition with H. Owen Reed. After completing his studies, Curnow worked as a music teacher and band director in various schools in Michigan. Curnow's career as a composer began in the 1970s when he started writing music for his school bands. His compositions were well-received, and he soon gained recognition as a talented composer. In 1977, he won the American Bandmasters Association's Ostwald Award for his composition "Symphonic Variants." Curnow's music is characterized by its melodic and harmonic richness, as well as its rhythmic vitality. He draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including folk music, hymns, and classical music. His compositions range from simple pieces for beginning bands to complex works for advanced ensembles. One of Curnow's most famous works is "Fanfare and Flourishes," which he wrote in 1989 for the inauguration of George H.W. Bush as President of the United States. The piece has since become a popular choice for ceremonial occasions and has been performed by numerous orchestras and bands around the world. Another notable work by Curnow is "Concertpiece for Cornet and Band," which he wrote in 1987 for his son, a talented cornet player. The piece has become a staple of the cornet repertoire and is widely performed by soloists and bands. Curnow has also written several works for symphony orchestra, including "Symphony No. 1" and "Symphony No. 2." These works showcase Curnow's skill as a composer of large-scale works and demonstrate his ability to write for a wide range of instruments. In addition to his work as a composer, Curnow is also a respected arranger. He has arranged music for a variety of ensembles, including brass bands, wind ensembles, and symphony orchestras. His arrangements are known for their clarity and musicality and are widely performed by ensembles around the world. Curnow has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1990, he was inducted into the American Bandmasters Association, and in 2000, he was awarded the Midwest Clinic Medal of Honor.
