The WDR Symphony Orchestra & Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Cologne, Germany. The ensemble was founded in 1947 as the orchestra of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), a public broadcasting corporation in Germany. Since then, the WDR Symphony Orchestra & Chorus has become one of the most respected and celebrated ensembles in the world of classical music. The WDR Symphony Orchestra & Chorus is made up of over 100 musicians and singers, including some of the most talented and accomplished performers in the world. The ensemble is led by its principal conductor, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who has been with the orchestra since 2010. One of the highlights of the WDR Symphony Orchestra & Chorus's career was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1959. This performance was conducted by the legendary conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and featured a chorus of over 200 singers. The performance was widely acclaimed and is still considered one of the greatest performances of the Ninth Symphony ever recorded. In 2014, the ensemble was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The Echo Klassik is one of the most prestigious awards in the world of classical music and is given to the best recordings of the year. In 2016, the ensemble was awarded the German Music Publishers' Association Award for its performance of the contemporary composer Wolfgang Rihm's Symphony No. 6.
