It was founded in 1952 as the Czechoslovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in the country. The orchestra was established as a part of the Czechoslovak Radio, which was the national radio broadcaster at the time. Its main purpose was to provide live music for radio broadcasts, but it soon gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and began to perform in concerts and recordings as well. The orchestra's first conductor was František Jílek, who led the ensemble for over 20 years. Under his leadership, the orchestra became known for its interpretations of Czech music, particularly the works of Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček. Jílek also introduced the orchestra to international audiences, leading it on tours throughout Europe and Asia. After Jílek's retirement in 1973, the orchestra went through a period of transition, with several conductors leading the ensemble for short periods of time. In 1987, the orchestra appointed its current chief conductor, Petr Vronský. Vronský has been with the orchestra for over 30 years and has led it to new heights of excellence. Under Vronský's leadership, the Brno Radio Symphony Orchestra has continued to focus on Czech music, but has also expanded its repertoire to include works from other countries and time periods. The orchestra has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Yo-Yo Ma, Maxim Vengerov, and Sir Neville Marriner. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its 2002 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which was part of the BBC Proms series. The orchestra performed Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," to critical acclaim. The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was later released on CD. The Brno Radio Symphony Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 1992, it was awarded the title of "National Orchestra of the Czech Republic" by the Ministry of Culture. In 2007, it received the prestigious Thalia Award for its contribution to Czech culture. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Brno Radio Symphony Orchestra is also involved in educational and outreach programs. It regularly performs for school groups and hosts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians. Overall, the Brno Radio Symphony Orchestra has established itself as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the Czech Republic and beyond. Its commitment to Czech music, combined with its high level of musicianship and dedication to education, make it a valuable cultural institution.More....
