He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was mentored by renowned composer Aaron Copland. Copland's influence can be seen in Hill's early works, which often featured American folk music themes. Hill's first major composition was his Symphony No. 1, which he wrote in 1972. The piece was well-received by critics and established Hill as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Hill continued to compose orchestral works, including his Symphony No. 2 and his Piano Concerto No. 1. In 1978, Hill was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra to compose a new work for their upcoming season. The result was his Symphony No. 3, which was inspired by the natural beauty of the English countryside. The piece was a critical and commercial success, cementing Hill's reputation as one of the leading composers of his generation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Hill continued to compose new works, including his Symphony No. 4 and his Piano Concerto No. 2.
