Appenzeller's performances were characterized by his exceptional technical skill and his ability to convey the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin, and his performances of these composers' works were widely regarded as some of the best in the world. Throughout his career, Appenzeller received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1952, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, which recognized his exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972, in recognition of his contributions to German culture. Appenzeller continued to perform and teach music until his death in 1983.
