Juliana Athayde is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a violinist and concertmaster. Born in Brazil, Athayde began her musical journey at a young age and has since become a highly sought-after performer and educator. Athayde was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1981. She grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a conductor, so it was only natural that Athayde would follow in their footsteps. Athayde began playing the violin at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with renowned violinists in Brazil and later went on to study at the University of Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance. After completing her studies, Athayde began her professional career as a violinist and quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent. She has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. One of Athayde's most notable performances was as the concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She held this position from 2014 to 2019 and was the first woman to hold the position in the orchestra's history. During her time as concertmaster, Athayde led the orchestra in numerous performances and helped to elevate the orchestra's reputation as one of the best in the country. In addition to her work as a performer, Athayde is also a dedicated educator. She has taught at several universities, including the University of Michigan and the Eastman School of Music. She is currently the Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Athayde has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2005, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. She has also been a recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, which is awarded to Black and Latinx classical musicians who have demonstrated excellence in their field. Athayde's dedication to her craft and her commitment to excellence have made her one of the most respected and admired classical music artists of her generation. Her performances have inspired audiences around the world, and her work as an educator has helped to shape the next generation of classical musicians.
