He was born on January 15, 1922, in Oslo, Norway. His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Olsen showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of five. Olsen's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Oslo Conservatory of Music when he was just seven years old. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers in Norway, including Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Robert Riefling. Olsen's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the most promising young musicians in Norway. In 1940, when Olsen was 18 years old, Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany. Despite the difficult circumstances, Olsen continued to pursue his music studies. He joined the resistance movement and used his musical talents to help spread messages of hope and resistance. Olsen's music became a symbol of hope for the Norwegian people during this difficult time. After the war, Olsen continued his music studies and began performing in concerts throughout Norway. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists in the country. In 1948, he won the prestigious Grieg Prize, which is awarded to the best young Norwegian musician each year. This award helped to launch Olsen's career and brought him to the attention of music lovers around the world. Olsen's international career began in 1950 when he was invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. His performance was a huge success, and he was invited to perform at other festivals throughout Europe. In 1952, he made his debut in the United States, performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
