He was the son of a Jewish family and grew up in a culturally rich environment. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a pianist who introduced him to classical music at a young age. Foa's love for music grew as he began to take piano lessons and sing in the choir at his local synagogue. Foa's passion for music led him to pursue a career in opera. He studied at the Conservatory of Bologna and made his debut in 1940 as a baritone in the opera "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi. Foa's performance was well-received, and he quickly gained recognition as a talented singer. During World War II, Foa was drafted into the Italian army and served as a medic. After the war, he resumed his career in opera and performed in various productions throughout Italy. In 1948, he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. He performed in several productions at the Teatro alla Scala, including "Don Giovanni" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and "Rigoletto" by Verdi. Foa's success in opera led him to explore other areas of the performing arts. He began to act in films and on stage, and he quickly gained recognition as a talented actor. In 1951, he starred in the film "Anna" directed by Alberto Lattuada, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Foa's performance in the film was praised by critics, and he became a well-known actor in Italy. In addition to his work in film and theater, Foa continued to perform in opera. He performed in productions throughout Europe and the United States, including at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He also recorded several albums of classical music, including a collection of songs by Franz Schubert. Foa's career continued to flourish throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He acted in several films, including "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, and he directed several plays. In recognition of his contributions to the performing arts, Foa was awarded several honors throughout his career. In 1976, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of the highest honors in Italy. He was also awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 1997. Foa continued to perform and act well into his 80s. He passed away on January 11, 2014, at the age of 97.
