Birth:in Athens, OHRaman Ramakrishnan is a renowned cellist and chamber musician who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born in 1971 in New York City, Ramakrishnan grew up in a family of musicians. His father, T. N. Krishnan, is a renowned Indian classical violinist, and his mother, Smt. Kamala Krishnan, is a singer and teacher of Indian classical music. Ramakrishnan began playing the cello at the age of six, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won numerous competitions and performed with major orchestras. He attended the Juilliard School, where he studied with Harvey Shapiro and Joel Krosnick, and later earned a master's degree from the Yale School of Music, where he studied with Aldo Parisot. In 1999, Ramakrishnan co-founded the Daedalus Quartet, which quickly gained recognition for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. The quartet won the grand prize at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and went on to perform at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to his work with the Daedalus Quartet, Ramakrishnan has also performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including pianist Jeremy Denk, violinist Joshua Bell, and composer John Adams. Ramakrishnan is also a dedicated teacher, and has taught at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and the Mannes School of Music. He is currently on the faculty of the Bard College Conservatory of Music. Throughout his career, Ramakrishnan has received numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Banff International String Quartet Competition, he has won the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award.
