Myung-Wha Chung is a renowned cellist and one of the most celebrated classical music artists of our time. Born on December 22, 1944, in Seoul, South Korea, she was the third child of a musical family. Her father, Dae-Hyun Chung, was a violinist and conductor, and her mother, Hae-Sun Lee, was a pianist. Her older sisters, violinist Kyung-Wha Chung and pianist Myung-Whun Chung, also became successful musicians. Myung-Wha Chung began playing the cello at the age of six, and by the time she was nine, she had already won several competitions in Korea. In 1961, she moved to New York to study at the Juilliard School, where she studied with Leonard Rose and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1964. She continued her studies with Rose at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she earned a Master of Music degree in 1966. Chung's career as a soloist began in 1967 when she won the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions. This led to her debut with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. She quickly gained recognition for her virtuosic playing and musical sensitivity, and soon became one of the most sought-after cellists in the world. Throughout her career, Chung has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, such as Herbert von Karajan, Sir Georg Solti, and Seiji Ozawa. One of the highlights of Chung's career was her performance of the complete Bach Cello Suites at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1985. This was a monumental achievement, as the suites are considered some of the most challenging and profound works in the cello repertoire. Chung's interpretation was praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and it remains one of the most celebrated performances of the suites to this day. Chung has also been a dedicated chamber musician throughout her career. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet, the Emerson Quartet, and the Beaux Arts Trio. She has also collaborated with her sister, violinist Kyung-Wha Chung, in numerous concerts and recordings. In addition to her performing career, Chung has also been a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Southern California. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers as soloists and chamber musicians. Chung's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1988, she was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the South Korean government. She has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, the National Order of Merit by the French government, and the Ho-Am Prize, which is considered the Korean equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Myung-Wha Chung's legacy as a cellist and musician is one of unparalleled artistry and dedication. Her technical brilliance and emotional depth have inspired countless musicians and audiences around the world. She remains a beloved figure in the world of classical music, and her contributions to the art form will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
