He was the son of a musician, and his father was his first music teacher. Marquina showed an early interest in music and began playing the clarinet at a young age. He later studied at the Valencia Conservatory, where he learned to play the piano and the violin. After completing his studies, Marquina began his career as a conductor and composer. He worked as a conductor for various orchestras in Spain, including the Municipal Band of Valencia and the Band of the Royal Palace. He also composed music for these orchestras, as well as for other ensembles and solo performers. Marquina's music was heavily influenced by the traditional music of his native Valencia. He incorporated elements of folk music into his compositions, creating a unique sound that was both modern and traditional. His most famous work is the pasodoble "España Cañí," which has become a symbol of Spanish culture and is often played at bullfights and other events. Marquina's other notable works include the pasodobles "Valencia" and "Sierra Morena," as well as the zarzuela "La Corte de Faraón." He also composed music for films, including the score for the 1936 film "La Verbena de la Paloma." Marquina was a prolific composer, and his music was popular both in Spain and abroad. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Cross of Alfonso X the Wise and the Gold Medal of Fine Arts. He died on September 13, 1948, in Madrid, leaving behind a legacy of music that continues to be celebrated today.More....
