Sara Schoenbeck is a renowned bassoonist and composer in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in 1978 in California, Schoenbeck grew up in a musical family and began playing the bassoon at the age of 11. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and went on to study at the California Institute of the Arts, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in bassoon performance. After completing her studies, Schoenbeck began performing with a variety of ensembles and orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. She also began to explore the world of contemporary classical music, collaborating with composers and performers to create new works that pushed the boundaries of traditional classical music. One of Schoenbeck's most notable collaborations was with composer Anthony Braxton, with whom she worked on a number of projects over the course of several years. Together, they created a series of compositions that blended elements of jazz, classical music, and avant-garde improvisation, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated following among fans of experimental music. In addition to her work as a performer, Schoenbeck is also an accomplished composer in her own right. Her compositions have been performed by a variety of ensembles and orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. She has also been commissioned to create new works by a number of organizations, including the American Composers Forum and the Fromm Music Foundation. Throughout her career, Schoenbeck has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 2006, she was awarded a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, which allowed her to continue her work as a composer and performer. She has also been recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which awarded her a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship in 2011.
