Born on 22nd June 1998 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Smart showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of five. Smart's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. He started taking violin lessons with renowned violinist and teacher, Susan Collier, who recognized his talent and potential. Smart's dedication to his instrument was evident from an early age, and he quickly progressed through the grades, achieving distinctions in all his exams. In 2008, at the age of ten, Smart won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, becoming the youngest ever winner of the prestigious award. This was a significant achievement for Smart, and it marked the beginning of his career as a professional musician. Following his success at the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, Smart began to receive invitations to perform at major concerts and events.
