The ensemble was founded in 1946 by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra who wanted to explore chamber music repertoire and perform in smaller ensembles. The founding members of the Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble included violinists Willi Boskovsky and Franz Samohyl, violist Rudolf Streng, cellist Nikolaus Hübner, and double bassist Josef Hermann. These musicians were all members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which is one of the world's most renowned orchestras. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert, as well as pieces by more contemporary composers. The ensemble has also commissioned new works from composers such as Wolfgang Rihm and Friedrich Cerha. One of the highlights of the Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble's career was their performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1952. The ensemble performed Mozart's Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, K. 361, also known as the "Gran Partita." This performance was highly acclaimed and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in the world. The Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble has also performed at other major music festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. In addition to their performances, the Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 1970, the ensemble was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, and in 1996, they received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. The ensemble has also recorded extensively, with over 50 recordings to their name. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. Over the years, the membership of the Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble has changed, with new members joining and others leaving. However, the ensemble has maintained its reputation as one of the world's leading chamber music ensembles, and continues to perform and record to this day.More....
