Born on January 1, 1922, in Brussels, Belgium, Decroos showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He received his formal training at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied under the tutelage of Edouard Jacobs. Decroos made his debut as a soloist at the age of 16, performing the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career that would see him perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and conductors. In 1940, Decroos fled Belgium to escape the German occupation and settled in France. He continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned cellist Paul Tortelier. During this time, he also performed with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire and the Orchestre National de France. Decroos' career took off in the 1950s when he began performing with the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Adrian Boult. He also performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. In 1956, he made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Decroos was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as Henri Dutilleux and Witold Lutosławski. In addition to his work as a cellist, Decroos was also an accomplished conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Orchestre National de Belgique from 1962 to 1968 and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège from 1971 to 1976. He also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Decroos received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1960, he was awarded the Prix de la Critique Musicale in France for his recording of the Bach Cello Suites. In 1972, he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Couronne by the Belgian government. He was also awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the Brahms Double Concerto with violinist Arthur Grumiaux. Decroos continued to perform and record well into his later years. He made his final recording in 1995, at the age of 73, performing the Bach Cello Suites for the third time in his career. He passed away on December 1, 2012, at the age of 90.
