The Stockholm Saxophone Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1986 by four young saxophonists who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the possibilities of their instrument in a classical context. The founding members of the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet were Johan van der Linden (soprano saxophone), Per Johansson (alto saxophone), Ulf Johansson Werre (tenor saxophone), and Kjell Fageus (baritone saxophone). All four musicians had studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. From the beginning, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet set out to challenge the traditional perception of the saxophone as a jazz or pop instrument and to showcase its versatility and expressive range in the classical repertoire. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming, which combined classical masterpieces with contemporary works and original arrangements of popular music. One of the highlights of the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet's early career was their participation in the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1988. They were the first saxophone quartet ever to compete in the competition, which is open to instrumentalists and chamber ensembles from around the world. The quartet's performance of works by Bach, Debussy, and Piazzolla impressed the judges and earned them a second prize, which helped to launch their international career. Since then, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet has performed in major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and has released several critically acclaimed recordings. They have collaborated with renowned musicians such as pianist Roland Pöntinen, cellist Mats Lidström, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and have commissioned and premiered works by composers such as Anders Hillborg, Pär Lindgren, and Karin Rehnqvist. One of the hallmarks of the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet's performances is their seamless blend of technical precision and emotional depth. They are known for their impeccable ensemble playing, which allows them to create a rich and nuanced sound that is both powerful and delicate. They are also skilled at conveying the emotional and narrative aspects of the music they perform, whether it is the melancholic beauty of a Bach chorale or the fiery passion of a tango by Piazzolla. Over the years, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to the classical music world. In addition to their success at the ARD Competition, they have won prizes at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, and the Tokyo International Chamber Music Competition. They have also been awarded the Swedish Grammy for Best Classical Album twice, for their recordings of music by Bach and Piazzolla. Despite their many achievements, the members of the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet remain committed to their original vision of exploring the possibilities of the saxophone in classical music.
