Orchestra Nova is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1987 by conductor and music director, Jung-Ho Pak. The ensemble is based in San Diego, California, and has become one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the United States. Jung-Ho Pak was born in Seoul, South Korea, and moved to the United States when he was six years old. He began studying music at a young age and eventually attended the Juilliard School in New York City. After graduating, he worked as a conductor for various orchestras and opera companies before founding Orchestra Nova. The ensemble's first performance was in 1987 at the University of California, San Diego. From the beginning, Orchestra Nova was known for its innovative programming and commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and unique approach to classical music. Over the years, Orchestra Nova has performed with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists from other genres, including jazz musicians, rock bands, and dancers. One of Orchestra Nova's most notable performances was in 2009, when the ensemble performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the San Diego Civic Theatre. The performance was part of a larger project called "The Beethoven Experience," which included a series of concerts, lectures, and community events. The performance of the Ninth Symphony was particularly memorable because it featured a choir made up of over 200 singers from the San Diego area. In addition to its performances, Orchestra Nova has also been recognized for its educational programs. The ensemble has a strong commitment to music education and has developed a number of programs to bring classical music to young people. One of the most successful programs is the "Classics 4 Kids" series, which introduces elementary school students to classical music through interactive concerts and educational materials. Orchestra Nova has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2007, the ensemble was named "Orchestra of the Year" by the San Diego Music Awards. The following year, Jung-Ho Pak was named "Conductor of the Year" by the same organization. In 2011, Orchestra Nova was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support its educational programs. Despite its many successes, Orchestra Nova has faced some challenges in recent years. In 2012, the ensemble announced that it would be suspending its operations due to financial difficulties. However, the ensemble's supporters rallied to save the organization, and in 2013, Orchestra Nova announced that it would be returning to the stage. Since its return, Orchestra Nova has continued to innovate and push the boundaries of classical music. The ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of artists and has developed new programs to engage audiences of all ages. Today, Orchestra Nova is recognized as one of the most dynamic and innovative classical music ensembles in the United States.
