Larry Kert was an American actor and singer who was born on December 5, 1930, in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of a cantor and grew up in a musical family. Kert began his career in the entertainment industry as a child actor, appearing in several films and television shows. However, it was his talent as a singer that would eventually make him a star. Kert's first major break came in 1956 when he was cast as Tony in the original Broadway production of West Side Story. The show, which was a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City, was a huge success and Kert's performance was widely praised. He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in the show. Following the success of West Side Story, Kert went on to star in several other Broadway productions, including The Gay Life, which earned him another Tony Award nomination, and Cabaret, in which he played the role of the Emcee. Kert's performance in Cabaret was particularly notable, as he brought a dark and edgy quality to the character that had not been seen before. In addition to his work on Broadway, Kert also appeared in several films and television shows throughout his career. He had a recurring role on the television series The Doctors and the Nurses and appeared in films such as The Last Unicorn and The Little Prince. Despite his success as an actor, Kert's true passion was always music. He released several albums throughout his career, including Love Songs from the Movies and Larry Kert Sings Rodgers and Hammerstein. He also performed in concert halls and nightclubs across the country, showcasing his powerful and emotive voice. Kert's career was not without its challenges, however. He struggled with addiction throughout much of his life and was open about his struggles with alcoholism. Despite this, he continued to work and perform, and his talent and charisma never wavered. Tragically, Kert's life was cut short when he passed away on June 5, 1991, at the age of 60. However, his legacy as a talented and versatile performer lives on, and his contributions to the world of music and theater continue to be celebrated to this day.
