Nathalie Paulin is a Canadian soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born in Montreal, Quebec, on May 23, 1966, Paulin grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a professor of literature. From a young age, Paulin showed an interest in singing, and her parents encouraged her to pursue her passion. Paulin began her formal music education at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, where she studied under the guidance of soprano Marie Daveluy. She later went on to study at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. After completing her undergraduate studies, Paulin continued her education at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with renowned soprano Judith Raskin. Throughout her career, Paulin has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and opera companies. She has appeared with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, among others. She has also performed with the Canadian Opera Company, the Opéra de Montréal, the Opéra de Québec, and the Opéra de Marseille. One of the highlights of Paulin's career was her performance in the title role of Handel's Semele with the Canadian Opera Company in 2000. The production was directed by renowned Canadian director Robert Carsen and received critical acclaim. Paulin's performance was praised for its "radiant tone" and "dramatic intensity." In addition to her work on the opera stage, Paulin is also a sought-after concert performer. She has performed in recital at venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. She has also appeared as a soloist in oratorios and choral works, including Handel's Messiah, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and Mozart's Requiem. Paulin has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1991, she was the winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which helped launch her career in the United States. She has also been the recipient of the Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance in Opera, and the Prix Opus for Female Singer of the Year. In addition to her performing career, Paulin is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at the University of Toronto, the Glenn Gould School, and the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. She has also served as a mentor for young singers through programs such as the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio and the Atelier lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal. Throughout her career, Nathalie Paulin has established herself as one of Canada's most accomplished and respected sopranos.
