Glenn Osser was an American composer, arranger, conductor, and pianist who was born on March 28, 1914, in New York City. He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and he began playing the piano at a young age. Osser attended the Juilliard School of Music, where he studied composition and orchestration. After graduating from Juilliard, Osser began his career as a pianist and arranger for various radio programs. He also worked as a staff arranger for Decca Records, where he arranged music for artists such as Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Louis Armstrong. In the 1940s, Osser formed his own orchestra, which became known as Glenn Osser and His Orchestra. The orchestra was known for its lush, romantic sound, and it quickly became popular with audiences. Osser's arrangements were often featured on radio programs such as The Kate Smith Show and The Perry Como Show. One of Osser's most famous arrangements was for the song "Ebb Tide," which was originally written by Robert Maxwell and Carl Sigman. Osser's arrangement of the song became a hit in 1953, and it has since become a classic of the easy listening genre. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Osser was also a conductor. He conducted the orchestra for the television show Your Hit Parade, which was a popular music program that aired from 1950 to 1959. Osser also conducted the orchestra for the Miss America pageant for many years. Osser's orchestra continued to perform throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and it recorded several albums for RCA Victor. The orchestra's recordings included popular songs such as "Moon River," "The Shadow of Your Smile," and "The Way We Were." In addition to his work with his orchestra, Osser also composed music for films and television shows. He composed the music for the film The Big Circus in 1959, and he also composed music for the television shows The F.B.I. and The Streets of San Francisco. Osser's work as a composer and arranger earned him several awards and honors throughout his career. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "A Certain Smile," which he co-wrote with Paul Francis Webster for the film of the same name. He also won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the song "Love Theme from The Godfather." Glenn Osser passed away on April 29, 2014, at the age of 100. He left behind a legacy of beautiful music and innovative arrangements that continue to be enjoyed by audiences today.
