He was the youngest of six children in his family. His father was a schoolteacher, and his mother was a homemaker. Kolár showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Kolár's family moved to Prague when he was ten years old, and he continued his music education at the Prague Conservatory. He studied piano with Václav Štěpán and composition with Alois Hába. Kolár was a talented student and won several awards for his performances and compositions. After completing his studies at the Prague Conservatory, Kolár continued his education at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He studied composition with Jaroslav Ježek and conducting with Václav Talich. Kolár graduated from the academy in 1938. Kolár began his professional career as a pianist and conductor in Prague. He performed with several orchestras, including the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. He also worked as a conductor for the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra. Kolár's career was interrupted by World War II. He was drafted into the Czechoslovak Army and served as a medic. After the war, Kolár returned to Prague and resumed his career as a musician. In 1948, Kolár was appointed the conductor of the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra. He held this position for ten years and led the orchestra on several international tours. Kolár also worked as a guest conductor with several other orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Kolár was also a prolific composer. He wrote several symphonies, concertos, and chamber music pieces. His music was influenced by Czech folk music and the works of composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana. Kolár's most famous composition is his Symphony No. 1, which he wrote in 1953. The symphony is a tribute to the victims of the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. It is a powerful and emotional work that has been performed by orchestras around the world. Kolár received several awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1964, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, one of the highest civilian honors in the Soviet Union. He was also awarded the Czechoslovak State Prize for Music in 1965.
