Artist Info

Cosima Gerhardt was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. She was born on August 25, 1928, in Berlin, Germany, to a family of musicians. Her father, Heinrich Gerhardt, was a well-known conductor, and her mother, Maria Gerhardt, was a pianist. Cosima grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. Cosima's talent for music was evident from an early age, and she began her formal training in music at the age of six. She studied piano under the guidance of her mother and later went on to study singing. She received her vocal training from some of the most renowned teachers in Germany, including Margarete Teschemacher and Maria Ivogün. Cosima's career as a classical music artist began in the early 1950s when she made her debut as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Her performance was well-received, and she soon became a sought-after artist in Germany. She went on to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe, including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Cosima's performances were characterized by her rich, warm voice and her ability to convey the emotions of the music she sang. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Franz Schubert. Her performances of Schubert's song cycles, in particular, were highly acclaimed, and she was considered one of the foremost interpreters of his music. Cosima's career reached new heights in the 1960s when she began performing in the United States. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1962, playing the role of Cherubino in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." Her performance was a resounding success, and she went on to perform in several other productions at the Met, including "Don Giovanni" and "The Magic Flute." Cosima's success in the United States led to her being invited to perform in other parts of the world. She toured extensively in Asia, performing in Japan, South Korea, and China. She also performed in Australia and South America, where she was received with great enthusiasm. Cosima's career was not without its challenges. In the early 1970s, she suffered a vocal injury that forced her to take a break from performing. She underwent surgery and spent several months recuperating. However, she was determined to return to the stage, and she worked hard to regain her vocal strength. She made a triumphant comeback in 1973, performing in a series of concerts in Europe. Cosima's contribution to the world of music was recognized with several awards and honors. She was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1975, and in 1982, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Berlin State Opera. She was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria in 1993. Cosima retired from performing in the late 1990s, but she continued to be involved in the world of music. She taught singing at the Berlin University of the Arts and was a mentor to many young singers. She also served as a judge in several international singing competitions. Cosima Gerhardt passed away on January 28, 2018, at the age of 89. She left behind a legacy of beautiful music and inspired generations of musicians.
