The Polish Radio Orchestra & Chorus Krakow is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 70 years. The ensemble was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, as part of the newly established Polish Radio in Krakow. The founding members of the orchestra and chorus were a group of talented musicians and singers who were determined to revive the rich musical traditions of Poland that had been suppressed during the war. Under the leadership of conductor and composer Stanisław Wisłocki, the ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its outstanding performances of classical music, particularly the works of Polish composers such as Chopin, Szymanowski, and Penderecki. Over the years, the Polish Radio Orchestra & Chorus Krakow has undergone several changes in personnel and leadership, but its commitment to excellence in classical music has remained steadfast. Today, the ensemble is led by conductor and artistic director Łukasz Borowicz, who has been praised for his innovative programming and dynamic performances. One of the highlights of the Polish Radio Orchestra & Chorus Krakow's history was its performance at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, where it represented Poland and received widespread acclaim for its rendition of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1. The ensemble has also performed at numerous prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. In addition to its live performances, the Polish Radio Orchestra & Chorus Krakow has also made numerous recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim and awards. One of its most notable recordings is the complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies, which was released in 2017 to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. The ensemble has also collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors over the years, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and conductor Sir Simon Rattle. These collaborations have resulted in some of the most memorable performances in the ensemble's history. The Polish Radio Orchestra & Chorus Krakow has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the prestigious Fryderyk Award, which is the highest honor in the Polish music industry. The ensemble has also been recognized for its contributions to Polish culture and its promotion of classical music around the world. Despite its many achievements, the Polish Radio Orchestra & Chorus Krakow remains committed to its mission of preserving and promoting the rich musical traditions of Poland. Through its exceptional performances and recordings, the ensemble continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike with its passion and dedication to classical music.
