Role:EnsembleGenre:ChamberThe Valerius Ensemble is a classical music group based in the Netherlands. The ensemble was founded in 1984 by a group of young musicians who were studying at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. The founding members of the group were violinist Robert Windak, violist Eva Stegeman, cellist René Berman, and pianist Ivo Janssen. The ensemble takes its name from the Dutch composer and music theorist Adriaan Valerius, who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Valerius is best known for his collection of Dutch folk songs, which he published in 1626 under the title "Neder-landtsche Gedenck-clanck" (Dutch Memorial Music). From its early days, the Valerius Ensemble has been committed to performing a wide range of classical music, from the Baroque era to the present day. The group has a particular interest in contemporary music, and has commissioned and premiered works by many Dutch and international composers. Over the years, the Valerius Ensemble has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Salzburg Festival. The group has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Martha Argerich, and violinist Joshua Bell. One of the highlights of the Valerius Ensemble's career was its performance at the 1998 World Expo in Lisbon, Portugal. The group was invited to perform at the Dutch pavilion, and gave a series of concerts that were attended by thousands of people. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its energy, virtuosity, and musicality. In addition to its concert performances, the Valerius Ensemble has also made many recordings. The group's discography includes more than 20 albums, featuring works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert, as well as contemporary composers such as Louis Andriessen, John Adams, and Arvo Pärt. The Valerius Ensemble has received many awards and honors over the years. In 1990, the group was awarded the Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for classical musicians in the Netherlands. The ensemble has also been awarded the Edison Classical Music Award, the Dutch equivalent of the Grammy Awards, for its recordings of works by Mozart and Beethoven. In addition to its concert and recording activities, the Valerius Ensemble is also committed to music education. The group regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has established a scholarship program to support talented young musicians in the Netherlands. Today, the Valerius Ensemble continues to be one of the leading classical music groups in the Netherlands and beyond. The group's commitment to musical excellence, innovation, and education has made it a beloved and respected institution in the world of classical music.More....
