From a young age, McLennan showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. McLennan's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 2002. He then went on to pursue his Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman.
