James McLennan was born on May 12, 1980, in Toronto, Canada. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, McLennan showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. McLennan's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 2002.
