He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Schoneberger showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Schoneberger's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Franz Schmidt. Schmidt recognized Schoneberger's exceptional talent and encouraged him to pursue a career as a concert pianist. In 1943, Schoneberger made his debut as a concert pianist at the Vienna Musikverein. He received critical acclaim for his performance and was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Schoneberger performed extensively throughout Europe, playing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. In 1948, Schoneberger moved to the United States to further his career. He settled in New York City and began performing regularly at Carnegie Hall. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and accomplished pianists of his generation. Throughout his career, Schoneberger was known for his technical proficiency and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. In 1956, Schoneberger was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, which is awarded annually to outstanding classical musicians. The award recognized Schoneberger's exceptional talent and his contributions to the world of classical music. Over the course of his career, Schoneberger performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Georg Solti. Schoneberger's recordings were also highly acclaimed. He recorded extensively for the Deutsche Grammophon label, and his recordings of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin are considered some of the finest ever made. In addition to his performing career, Schoneberger was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Juilliard School in New York City and at the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as concert pianists. Schoneberger continued to perform and teach well into his later years. He died on June 15, 2001, at the age of 76.
