Born on December 27, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jessop grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He attended Brigham Young University (BYU) where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting. After completing his studies, Jessop began his career as a music educator, teaching at several universities including BYU, the University of Utah, and California State University, Long Beach. He also served as the director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from 1999 to 2008, leading the choir in numerous performances and recordings. One of Jessop's most notable achievements was his role in the creation of the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra (AFCO) in 2008. As the founding conductor and artistic director of AFCO, Jessop has led the ensemble in numerous performances of classical works, including Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Verdi's Requiem. Throughout his career, Jessop has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2000, he was awarded the National Educator of the Year Award by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He has also received the Utah Governor's Mansion Artist Award, the BYU Distinguished Service Award, and the Utah Governor's Medal for Science and the Arts. In addition to his work as a conductor and educator, Jessop is also an accomplished singer. He has performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Utah Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
