Gauthier de Coincy was a French composer and poet who lived during the 13th century. He was born in the town of Coincy, located in the Champagne region of France, around the year 1177. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was educated at the University of Paris and may have been a member of the clergy. De Coincy is best known for his contributions to the genre of medieval French song, or chanson. He is credited with composing over 400 chansons, many of which were written in honor of the Virgin Mary. His most famous work is the collection of songs known as the Miracles de Nostre-Dame, which tells the stories of various miracles performed by the Virgin Mary. De Coincy's chansons were written in the style of the trouvères, a group of medieval French poets and musicians who were active during the 12th and 13th centuries. Like the trouvères, de Coincy's chansons were typically performed by troubadours, or traveling musicians, who would sing and play instruments such as the lute or the vielle. De Coincy's chansons were notable for their simple melodies and straightforward lyrics, which often focused on religious themes. Many of his songs were written in the form of a dialogue between the Virgin Mary and a supplicant, with the Virgin Mary offering comfort and guidance to those in need. In addition to his work as a composer, de Coincy was also a prolific poet. He wrote several works in addition to the Miracles de Nostre-Dame, including a collection of love poems known as the Chansonnier de Noailles. De Coincy's music and poetry were highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was known to have been a favorite of the French royal court. His chansons were widely performed throughout France and were influential in the development of the troubadour tradition. Today, de Coincy is remembered as one of the most important composers of medieval French song. His chansons continue to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world, and his influence can be heard in the work of later composers such as Guillaume de Machaut and Francesco Landini. Some of de Coincy's most famous chansons include "Dou way, Robin," "Dame, de qui toute ma joie vient," and "Pour ce que tous mes chans fais." These songs, along with the rest of de Coincy's oeuvre, continue to be celebrated for their beauty, simplicity, and devotion to the Virgin Mary.
