Harry Von Tilzer was a prominent American composer of popular music during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on July 8, 1872, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the youngest of eight children in a family of German immigrants. His birth name was Aaron Gumbinsky, but he later changed it to Harry Von Tilzer, which he believed sounded more musical. Von Tilzer grew up in a musical family, and his father was a violinist who played in local orchestras. He began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. However, he dropped out of school at the age of 14 to pursue a career in music. In 1892, Von Tilzer moved to New York City to try his luck in the music industry. He started out as a song plugger, playing and singing new songs in music stores to promote them to customers. He soon began writing his own songs and selling them to publishers. Von Tilzer's breakthrough came in 1895 with the song "My Old New Hampshire Home." The song became a hit and established him as a successful songwriter. He went on to write many more popular songs, including "A Bird in a Gilded Cage," "Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie," and "I Want a Girl (Just Like the Girl That Married Dear Old Dad)." Von Tilzer's music was characterized by catchy melodies and sentimental lyrics that appealed to a wide audience. His songs were often performed in vaudeville shows and became popular with the general public. He was one of the first composers to use the phonograph to promote his music, and he recorded many of his own songs. In addition to his popular songs, Von Tilzer also composed music for musical theater. He wrote the score for the 1904 musical "The Wizard of Oz," which was based on L. Frank Baum's book of the same name. The musical was a success and helped to establish Von Tilzer as a serious composer. Von Tilzer continued to write popular songs throughout his career, but his success began to wane in the 1920s with the rise of jazz and other new forms of popular music. He continued to write music, but he never regained the level of success he had enjoyed earlier in his career. Despite his declining popularity, Von Tilzer remained an important figure in the history of American popular music. His songs were an important part of the cultural landscape of the early 20th century, and they continue to be performed and recorded today. He died on January 10, 1946, in New York City, at the age of 73.
