He was born on August 22, 1908, in Vienna, Austria, to a family of musicians. His father, Franz Doktor, was a well-known violinist, and his mother, Marie Doktor, was a pianist. Karl Doktor showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. However, he later switched to the viola, which became his primary instrument. Doktor received his early music education from his parents and later studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He also studied with the famous violist Lionel Tertis in London and with the composer and conductor Paul Hindemith in Berlin. Doktor's training with Hindemith had a significant impact on his musical style and approach to playing the viola. In 1930, Doktor joined the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as a violist. He remained with the orchestra until 1938 when he fled Austria due to the Nazi occupation. Doktor settled in the United States and became a citizen in 1943. He joined the NBC Symphony Orchestra in New York City and later became the principal violist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Doktor's career as a soloist and chamber musician was equally impressive. He performed with many renowned musicians, including pianist Rudolf Serkin, cellist Pablo Casals, and violinist Isaac Stern. Doktor was also a founding member of the Budapest Quartet, which was one of the most celebrated string quartets of the 20th century. The quartet performed together for over 30 years and recorded numerous albums. In addition to his performing career, Doktor was also a respected conductor and teacher. He conducted many orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Doktor was also a faculty member at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he taught viola and chamber music for over 30 years. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, including violist Paul Neubauer and cellist David Finckel. Doktor's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1973 and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1998. Doktor was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Hartford in Connecticut in 1982. One of Doktor's most significant contributions to the world of music was his work as an advocate for the viola. He believed that the viola was an underappreciated instrument and worked to promote its use in orchestral and chamber music. Doktor also commissioned many new works for the viola and was a champion of contemporary music. Karl Doktor passed away on January 28, 1976, in New York City. He left behind a legacy as one of the most influential violists of the 20th century. His contributions to the world of music as a performer, conductor, and teacher continue to inspire musicians today.More....
