Role:EnsembleThe University of Alberta Madrigal Singers is a classical music ensemble that has been delighting audiences with their beautiful harmonies and stunning performances for over 50 years. Founded in 1965 by Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff, the group has become one of the most respected and renowned choral ensembles in Canada. The Madrigal Singers are made up of approximately 20-25 singers, all of whom are students at the University of Alberta. The group is known for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to perform a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary works. Over the years, the Madrigal Singers have had many talented members, including some who have gone on to become professional musicians and educators. Some of the group's most notable alumni include conductor and composer Allan Bevan, conductor and educator Debra Cairns, and singer and actor Tom Jackson. One of the highlights of the Madrigal Singers' history was their performance at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, Alberta. The group was invited to perform at the opening ceremonies, where they sang the Canadian national anthem and a medley of Canadian folk songs. The performance was a huge success and helped to raise the profile of the Madrigal Singers both nationally and internationally. In addition to their performance at the Olympics, the Madrigal Singers have also been recognized for their outstanding performances at various choral competitions and festivals. In 1990, the group won first place in the mixed choir category at the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. They have also been invited to perform at the prestigious Festival 500 in St. John's, Newfoundland, and the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, British Columbia. The Madrigal Singers have also released several recordings over the years, including their most recent album, "Songs of the Spirit," which features a collection of sacred and secular choral music from around the world. The group's recordings have received critical acclaim and have helped to further establish their reputation as one of Canada's premier choral ensembles. Despite their many accomplishments, the Madrigal Singers remain committed to their mission of promoting and performing choral music of the highest quality. They continue to inspire audiences with their beautiful harmonies and their passion for music, and they are sure to remain a beloved fixture in the Canadian choral community for many years to come.More....
