Loonis McGlohon was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger who was born on March 14, 1921, in Statesville, North Carolina. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother played the piano. McGlohon began playing the piano at the age of five and showed a natural talent for music. McGlohon attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied music and played in the university's jazz band. After graduating in 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II. While in the army, he played in the 314th Army Special Services Band, which was led by Glenn Miller. After the war, McGlohon moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He played in various jazz clubs and worked as a studio musician. In 1950, he joined the Benny Goodman Orchestra as a pianist and arranger. He stayed with the orchestra for two years and recorded several albums with them. In the 1950s and 1960s, McGlohon worked as a composer and arranger for television shows and commercials. He also wrote music for Broadway shows, including "Sophisticated Ladies" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." In 1978, he won a Tony Award for his work on "Ain't Misbehavin'." Throughout his career, McGlohon also recorded several albums as a solo artist. His music was a blend of jazz, classical, and pop influences. He was known for his lyrical and melodic piano playing and his ability to create beautiful arrangements. In addition to his work as a musician, McGlohon was also a writer. He wrote several books, including "The Song Is Ended: Songwriters and American Music, 1900-1950" and "The Cole Porter Songbook." He also wrote a column for the Charlotte Observer newspaper. McGlohon was a beloved figure in the music world and was known for his kindness and generosity. He was a mentor to many young musicians and was always willing to share his knowledge and experience. McGlohon passed away on February 26, 2008, at the age of 86. He left behind a legacy of beautiful music and a deep love for the art form. His contributions to the world of jazz and popular music will always be remembered.
