Tor Stokke was a Norwegian classical pianist and composer, born on August 22, 1939, in Oslo, Norway. He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Tor showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Tor's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with several renowned pianists, including Robert Riefling and Hans Leygraf. Tor's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. In 1958, Tor made his debut as a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Tor received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of Tor's career as a concert pianist, and he went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Tor was known for his exceptional technique and musicality. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. Tor was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many leading musicians and orchestras. In addition to his performances and compositions, Tor was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at several music schools and universities, including the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Juilliard School in New York. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians. Tor received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of St. Olav, one of Norway's highest honors, and the Grieg Prize, which is awarded to outstanding Norwegian musicians. He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Despite his success, Tor remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and compose until his death on December 6, 2013, at the age of 74.
