Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1963, Shiffman began his musical journey at a young age, showing a natural talent for the violin. He received his early training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he studied with renowned violinist and pedagogue Erika Raum. Shiffman continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with the legendary violinist and teacher Jascha Brodsky. He also studied chamber music with Felix Galimir and Arnold Steinhardt, both of whom were members of the renowned Guarneri Quartet. Shiffman's training at Curtis was a formative experience that helped shape his musical style and approach to performance. After completing his studies, Shiffman embarked on a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished musicians of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman, and Emanuel Ax. One of the highlights of Shiffman's career was his tenure as the first violinist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet. The quartet was founded in 1989 and quickly established itself as one of the most dynamic and innovative ensembles of its generation. Shiffman's contributions to the quartet were significant, and he helped lead the group to numerous accolades and awards, including two Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards) and a Grammy nomination. In addition to his work as a performer, Shiffman has also made significant contributions to the world of music education. He has served as the director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition and as the dean of the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He is currently the director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Chamber Music Encounters program, which provides young musicians with the opportunity to work with some of the world's leading chamber musicians. Shiffman's commitment to music education is rooted in his belief that music has the power to transform lives. He has said that "music is a language that transcends borders and cultures, and it has the power to bring people together in a way that nothing else can." This belief has inspired him to work tirelessly to promote music education and to help young musicians develop their skills and talents. Throughout his career, Shiffman has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 2000, he was awarded the Virginia Parker Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts, which recognizes outstanding contributions to Canadian classical music. In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contributions to music education in Canada. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Calgary and the University of Victoria. In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Shiffman is also a passionate advocate for the arts. He has served on the boards of numerous arts organizations, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and the Glenn Gould Foundation.More....
