After completing his studies, Marcellus began his professional career as a trombonist. In 1982, Marcellus joined the faculty of the Eastman School of Music as a professor of trombone. He remained in this position for 36 years until his retirement in 2018. During his tenure at Eastman, Marcellus was a highly respected teacher and mentor to many aspiring musicians. He also served as the chair of the brass department and the director of the Eastman Trombone Choir.
