David Shaler was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Shaler showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Shaler's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Under her guidance, Shaler developed a deep understanding and appreciation for classical music. At the age of 12, Shaler made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Shaler received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the next few years, Shaler continued to perform at various venues across the United States and Europe. He won several competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Paris and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas. In 2005, Shaler was invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the BBC Proms. He played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio and was highly praised by critics. Shaler's career continued to flourish, and he became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In 2010, Shaler released his debut album, which featured works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo. In 2015, Shaler was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. The grant provided Shaler with financial support and helped to further his career. Shaler continued to perform and record throughout the 2010s, releasing several more albums and collaborating with other musicians. In 2019, he performed at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, playing a piece by Bach. Throughout his career, Shaler has been praised for his technical skill, his musicality, and his ability to connect with audiences.
