Shi-Yeon Sung is a renowned classical music conductor who has made a name for herself in the international music scene. Born in Seoul, South Korea, on August 15, 1975, Sung showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Sung's musical education began at the Yewon School, a prestigious music school in Seoul, where she studied piano and violin. She later attended the Seoul Arts High School, where she continued her studies in piano and began to develop an interest in conducting. Sung went on to study conducting at the Seoul National University, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in 1997. After completing her studies in South Korea, Sung moved to the United States to further her education in music. She enrolled at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she studied with renowned conductors such as Charles Dutoit and Seiji Ozawa. Sung earned her Master's degree in conducting from the conservatory in 2001. Sung's career as a conductor began to take off in the early 2000s. In 2003, she was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for three years. During her time with the orchestra, Sung had the opportunity to work with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including James Levine and Bernard Haitink. In 2006, Sung was appointed as the associate conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a position she held for four years. During her time with the orchestra, Sung conducted numerous concerts and worked with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma and Lang Lang. Sung's career continued to flourish in the following years. In 2010, she made her debut with the New York Philharmonic, conducting a program that included works by Beethoven and Brahms. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and Sung was praised for her musicality and technical skill. Sung has also conducted numerous other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also served as a guest conductor for the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, and the Korean Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work as a conductor, Sung is also a passionate advocate for music education. She has worked with numerous youth orchestras around the world, including the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Sung has also served as a guest lecturer at various universities and music schools, including the New England Conservatory of Music and the Seoul National University. Sung's talent and dedication to music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2006, she was awarded the Seiji Ozawa Conducting Fellowship, which allowed her to study with the renowned conductor for a year. Sung was also the recipient of the 2009 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, which is given annually to a young conductor who shows exceptional promise. In 2014, Sung was appointed as the music director of the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea, becoming the first female conductor to hold the position. Under her leadership, the orchestra has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and high-quality performances.
